Like I've mentioned in about one hundred and seven of my posts, I love being in the city. So much loving that if marrying the city of Philadelphia was a thing, I think I'd do it. Maybe I'll just stick to attempting to be mayor or something. Seriously Philly has not been called 'Filthadelphia' for no reason.
So history lesson! Whenever I leave Temple University, I always pass the "Divine Lorraine Hotel" also known as the abandoned building that I don't understand why because despite the graffiti (which I don't understand, either, obviously...OR HOW THEY DO THAT) I love the style of it. After my really good mood morning drive on Thursday, and a good ole post on my instagram, I couldn't resist wanting to learn more about it. #Broadstreet
Next, nerdy me started to creep on it via google images. I learned that it was one of the first hotels (originally appartments in industrial 1800's) in the early 1940's to integrate any race and religion at a hotel, as well as not allowing cursing, smoking, OR eating in your own room. (Originally it was an all-white hotel.) They had a central kitchen/dining area for that! All about that modesty, considering men and women couldn't even sleep on the same floors. A reverend at the time took over the hotel, and turned the top floor into an auditorium where he held services.
Now? It's just an abandoned building. But I'm COMPLETELY dying to go in there and see what its like. Who's with me adventures? No, seriously. I'm looking at you Cat or Monica. Or literally anyone who lives near (far works too!!!)

Wow. What a beautiful building. Abandoned buildings make me kind of sad, but they are so pretty. I kind of want to go in there and see what it looks like. Maybe I really just like old things. Like that last picture where the paint is peeling off the walls, I think that is so beautiful. There's an abandoned resort near where I live, and I walked around on the property and took some pictures one time. It was kind of scary being out in the middle of nowhere by myself, but I'm glad that I walked around and saw it. Here's the post if you want to see it: http://adventuresofteresaandluna.blogspot.com/2013/08/chateau-hutter.html
ReplyDeleteSomeone owns it and they've been trying to get zoning passed since like 1996 to renovate! AND YES i WILL GO THERE WITH YOU. Have you seen pictures from the roof at sunset?! #divinelorraine on IG. They're gorgeous!

Living just outside of Detroit - old buildings like this is sadly my norm here - it's great if you love ruin porn but they always ending up being the one perception and view people have of the city. But like you I always, always tend up trawling around google images and maps for hours looking up old buildings - especially hotels.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of an article I read in Creative Loafing a few weeks ago that showed the Clermont Hotel, which has been abandoned, before its facelift that is happening soon. Granted, it was never as nice as this place. But it's got some history, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteYou're awesome at taking pictures. Like your insta on the daily? SWOON.
ReplyDeleteAlright sign me up. You know how obsessed I am with abandoned structures. We'll check it out when it gets warmer & hopefully go with someone large avec penis to help with the sketch-ness of that area of Philly.
